To teach your dog to drop the ball: carry a spare ball with you during a game of fetch. When your dog comes toward you, don't reach for the ball in his mouth, instead show him the ball in your hand. Your dog will likely get excited and drop the ball, when he does, reinforce with the command "drop it" then reward your dog by throwing the other ball.
